Just a few blocks from bustling Navy Pier sits an unexpected oasis along the water, River Esplanade Park. It’s only claims about an acre of Chicago’s in-demand space, but the small enclave makes all the difference for people who work in the River North or Near North neighborhoods.

The focal point of the park is, undeniably, a massive fountain. Water cascades down a broad flight of steps with a circular waterfall sitting right at the heart of the fountain. Certain times throughout the day, a large cannon sends a jet of water hurtling toward the other side of the river. If you have some time to spare, sit down at River Esplanada Park to enjoy the show, chow down on your lunch, and watch boats drift by on the Chicago River.
